Shaam
Dr Shaam Al Abed is a postdoctoral fellow at the Eccles Institute of Neuroscience, JCSMR, ANU. She did her PhD at the University of Bordeaux, France, and was a post-doctoral researcher in the Marighetto Lab before moving to Australia to commence her work with Nathalie in 2018.
She is interested in memory formation in health and disease, including deficits in aging, PTSD, and intellectual disability. Her overarching goal is to find therapeutics to help those with memory disorders.
Shaam specialises in studying how brain structures are activated during complex behavioural tasks using optogenetic and photometric technologies.
Outside of the lab, Shaam is an excellent volleyball player and is also interested in contempory art, music, and she loves road trips.

"I have always been fascinated by how the brain works, and in all honesty, I do it for the puzzle! I want to decipher the mystery of how memories are stored and retrieved within the millions of available neurons. Added bonus: neuronal networks are also so beautiful, I could look at them for hours."
